Feminist Perspective: Voth's classroom.

I am a feminist for equal rights, I don't think that women are better than men and men are not better than women. I believe in what is right not by degrading women or men. Every gender should have equal opportunities. There are many interesting things I noticed in professor Voth's classroom but there was one thing that really stood out to me and I really enjoyed about the class. Most of the literature discussed in class, it always lead to a discussion in feminist. Professor Voth has mentioned before that he has taught a women's studies class, which I think is pretty cool. Even though he is a "man" and some people would say its wrong, but I think it is great because he wont be bias.

An occurrence when I noticed it,it was during short story analysis. A short story I enjoyed was "The yellow wall paper" and briefly it is about a sad a depressed woman who is married to a doctor, which he is also her doctor. her husband says she is really sick, so they go out of town so she can get better, but it makes it worse. she is basically in solitaire and is not allowed to do anything. This short story may not represent a strong, independent woman, but it is feminist by how controlled she is and she wants to escape but she can't because she isn't listened to. It is a type of feminist that can be frustrating because how women were treated.

Then the we moved on to plays, and part of that was we had to pick a type of criticism for a play we picked. Feminist criticism was one of the choices and I picked that one. Antigone is a great example of a feminist. She stood up for what she believes is right and did not want to be treated any different than men. Antigone was punished for digging up her brother, and no one could believe that a women could have dug up a man.She stood her ground and didn't let no one tell her what she can and can't do. So she was sentence to death and she didn't feel like dying when they said so, so she killed her self but not to avoid shame from the men but to show them that she can do what ever she wants.

As the class went on, feminist I feel never left the table.

The classroom then moved on to film literature and from all the students presentations. I noticed that most of all the films were degrading to women. Which yes, I know it has a lot to do when the films were done. "The salt of the earth" was another great example of feminist and a very good one, I highly recommend this film. This film was

about men fighting for equal rights at the work place compared to white men. After being denied so much, the men started a picket line to show how serious they were about equal rights. The men then got arrested and the women took over, the women were not afraid to speak their voices not only in time of need but during the entire film they spoke what they believe was right. It gave the women confidence and gave them another reason to be happy other than their children.

I personally love how somehow mostly every literature that was discussed in the class room. Lead to a conversation in feminist, even if it was just for a a few minutes. The topic was there, it opens up more windows for great discussions. It is refreshing to Professor Voth be so open about it even though he is a man, because there are quite a few men who are very anti- feminist. You can see his appreciation and passion for literature.
