Head, Heart by Lydia Davis

Heart weeps.

Head tries to help heart.

Head tells heart how it is, again:

You will lose the ones you love. They will all go. But

even the earth will go, someday.

Heart feels better, then.

But the words of head do not remain long in the ears of

heart.

Heart is so new to this.

I want them back, says heart.

Head is all heart has.

Help, head. Help heart.

This is a lovely short poems about the interaction between our rational mind and our emotions. It depicts the interaction when we experience loss. The rational mind will try to rationalize such a loss and for a short time maybe calm the emotional mind but the pain always calms back.

I really liked this poem it was short and eloquent. It deals with grief in an interesting way. It's often said that when you grief just having someone there without trying to fix anything or cheer you up really helps. It feels like that's exactly what this poem is doing. It just sitting there, being there, it’s not trying to fix or make anything better.
